Fusion of Technologies Discussed in Silicon Valley
by Ken North

Media Focuses on Experts Discussing the Marriage of SQL, XML, Web Services and Grid Computing

A panel discussion at Software Development 2004 featured researchers and standards architects discussing software trends and the fusion of software technologies. It was part of a rich conference program of keynotes, technical presentations and panel presentations. Because of the panel's subject matter, or perhaps because it included software industry icons, there was extensive media coverage of the panel (below).

The panel explored such topics as the future of XQuery, the state of open source software, the standards turf wars, and the future of database managers and RFID technologies. There was considerable discussion about the panel in web logs.  Links to trade press articles appear at the bottom of this page.

  • Jim Gray (author and Distinguished Engineer, Microsoft Research)
  • Jim Kleewein (Distinguished Engineer, IBM Silicon Valley Lab)
  • Jim Melton (author and Editor of the ISO/IEC SQL standard, Oracle Corporation)

The panel was recorded for audio and video playback. The audio is available in two parts. Running time for part 1 is 39:48.
